What is Double Deep Racking?

In and of itself, double-deep racking isn't truly a sort of racking. Not in the sense of motorized mobile or drive-in racking, which have extremely unique components that set them apart from other types of racking. Double Deep is more often used to describe how normal pallet racking is set up.

Double deep are two selective double lines of conventional APR placed back to back, however it can only be reached from one face. The front pallet can be accessed using any pallet racking system, while the back pallet can be accessed with fork extensions or a forklift with telescopic forks (see diagram below).

When applied properly, this results in a pallet racking system that is denser than regular pallet racking while still maintaining some degree of selectivity compared to extremely high-density storage options.

A double deep system may be swiftly disassembled and converted into a completely selective system without the addition of any more components. It is made up of the same components as a normal APR system.

The greater density than standard pallet racking at a more affordable price than drive-in and pallet live systems. It keeps prices low and development time to a minimum by using only common APR components to produce a dense storage system (unique among the alternatives for increased density).

♦ Simplicity

The only specialized equipment needed to operate Double Deep is a set of fork extensions, therefore the initial cost of the plant to run the system is kept to a minimum. There is no need for additional driver training for operators, and access time is faster than with many other deep storage systems, such as drive-in.

♦ Almost Selective High Density

When compared to actual high-density systems like drive-in or radio shuttle, double deep offers a higher density solution than normal APR while also granting you greater selectivity. It is perfect for products kept and transported in pairs of complementing pallets because the only thing that gets in the way of the pallet behind is the one pallet in front (see diagram above).

It is also incredibly helpful for warehouse operations where there is too much stock in common to justify the wasted space of a fully selective APR system but not enough to justify a higher-density system like a drive-in, which requires at least four identical products to be stored in the same lane and removed in the same order.

♦ Stock Rotation

Due to the double deep arrangement, goods with an expiration date can be put at the front of the bay, encouraging consumers to use them before a pallet of produce that is more recent. With the majority of WMS (Warehouse Management System) programs, this system is comparatively simple to establish.
